Town of  Holly Springs issued the following announcement on March 1.

Everyone is invited to celebrate Arbor Day with the Town of Holly Springs! Enjoy a tree giveaway and litter sweep on Saturday, March 18.

Mayor Sean Mayefskie proclaimed March 17 as Arbor Day in Holly Springs and recognized the Town’s recent designation as a Tree City USA for the fourth year in the row. To achieve this status in the nationwide movement, the Town has proven it meets urban forestry management requirements that help promote the health of trees while also expanding the number of public trees in the community.

“Preserving our community’s natural beauty and environmental health is important for us today and for generations to come," Mayefskie said.

Residents have several opportunities to celebrate Arbor Day and get involved:

Visit the Holly Springs Farmers Market for a free tree seedling. Drop by the Tree Advisory Committee’s tent at the market on Saturday, March 18, 9 a.m. to noon to receive a free tree seedling and other giveaways. Flowering dogwood, serviceberry, and fringe tree seedlings will be available while supplies last.

Apply to serve on the Tree Advisory Committee. The Holly Springs Tree Advisory Committee helps with planning an annual Arbor Day event, makes recommendations on tree maintenance guidelines, assists with the Town’s Street Tree Replacement program and plans public information initiatives surrounding the importance and need for tree preservation and maintenance. Applications will be accepted through Monday, April 3. Apply on the Town’s website.

Pick up trash during the Creek Week Litter Cleanup. Register in advance to join a litter cleanup event on Saturday, March 18 as part of Creek Week, an annual week that focuses on the importance of clean and healthy waterways. For more details, visit our website at hollyspringsnc.gov/creekweek

Learn more about street trees and related grant funding. As you travel around Town, enjoy the shade, greenery and natural habitats provided by street trees, which are trees planted in the public right of way, along sidewalks and roads.
